The narrator’s revelation is entirely unresolved, but the author was, perhaps, leading a reader to their own conclusions about how people work within social groups. A few people have the skill to make fire, cook meals, make repairs, etc, while others are being carr ied along because they do not possess said skill. Yet, the group still functions. The narrator is at once struck by the beauty of the fire, the â€Å"little dramas were being played out as fiery chambers were created and then destroyed in a crashing of sparks† (529). This moment, as miniscule as it may seem to the reader, serves to highlight the deeper theme of how the American Dream has been lost for the narrator. Life is full of â€Å"fiery chambers† that dance and envelope a person still capable of maintaining the passion to reach for their dream. But as with many who have held a dream and let it go (for reasons of life, love, or accident), that dream is â€Å"destroyed† exactly like the blazing cherubs of hope within the pit of fire. Additionally, Sampedro mercifully begged for an end to his painful life. Maneiro could not turn down these pleas given the fact that she knew him and understood his suffering. It would have been cruel and inhumane for Maneiro to turn down such pleas from a suffering man. According to the requirements for compassion, an individual should cooperate and comply with the pleas of a suffering person. Additionally, Sampedro has moral rights to ask for an end of his life. Additionally, Maneiro has the moral right of helping somebody overcome the suffering in his life. The two individuals have a right to choose freely and not inflict harm in each other’s life. Sampedro indicated expressly that he wanted an end to his life. The right of free choices included the right to end one’s life when necessary. Additionally, a person needs to opt to end his life (Manning 17). In my opinion, Maneiro chose to respect the wishes of Sampedro to end his life. Opponents of t he actions taken by Maneiro argue that the society has a right to protect the life of anybody. This means that Maneiro failed to protect the life of Sampedro. Lady Macbeth questioned Macbeths manliness several times throughout the story. Macbeth wanted to prove that he was a stronger person. Even though Macbeth proved his manliness, he regretted his decision. Macbeths decision to kill Duncan was based off of peer pressure from Lady Macbeth. The character Macbeth had been told by the three weird sisters that he was going to be the Thane of Cawdor and king of Scotland. In order for Macbeth to take the throne, he had to kill King Duncan. Macbeth never asked the question, Do I really have to kill Duncan in order to become king? Instead, Macbeth was pressured into his decision by his wife, Lady Macbeth. From Macbeths decision some ask the question, Was Macbeth really pressured by Lady Macbeth? Another question often brought up is, Why did Macbeth make the decision to kill Duncan? I believe the main reason for the murder of Duncan was from the peer pressure of Lady Macbeth. Macbeth had just returned from stopping two invading armies, but that did not stop him from wanting more power. Macbeth was ambitious but lacked he lacked the effort to make it happen (Snodgrass 37). She had a plan up her sleeve to kill Duncan. Lady Macbeth did not see an ything wrong with killing Duncan; she only saw a way to gain more power. Lady Macbeth called upon evil spirits to get her in the right mind-set to pressure Macbeth. Macbeth told his wife Duncan will be staying with us but he will leave the next morning. Lady Macbeth said, O! She told Macbeth, Look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent undert (I.V.63-64). She then said, Leave all the rest to me (I.V.71). Lady Macbeth meant go and treat Duncan like royalty and keep your murderous intent hidden. Lady Macbeth then planned out the plot to kill Duncan. That greatly showed her ambition and hunger for power. Macbeth contemplated if he should kill King Duncan. Macbeth had thought of several reasons why he should not and did not want to kill Duncan. First, Duncan was king over him. Second, Macbeth was his protector and host because he was staying at Macbeths house, and he should not harm him. Lastly, King Duncan had been a good and kind ruler, so Macbeth felt he should never hurt him. Macbeth brought to his wifes attention that he did not want to go through with the plan to kill King Duncan. He said, We will proceed no further in this business; he hath honourd me of late; and I have bought golden opinions from all sorts of people, which would be worn now in their newest gloss, not cast aside so soon (I.VII.31-34). That should have been the end, but Lady Macbeth would not take no for an answer. Lady Macbeth urged Macbeth to kill Duncan, which eventually led to his downfall. She did not only question his decision, but she questioned his manliness. Men never like to feel weaker than women. Macbeths wife said, When you durst do it when you were a man; and, to be more than what you were, you would be so much more the man (I.VII.49-51). Lady Macbeth meant if you murder Duncan and do what you plan, then you will be a real man. Lady Macbeth showed she could be masculine when she said, I have given suck and know how tender tis to love the babe that milks me; I would, while it was smiling in my face, have pluckd my nipple from his boneless gums, and dashd the brains out, had I so sworn as you have done (I.VII.54-59). Lady Macbeth expressed a very powerful statement when she said she would be able to kill her own child. Lady Macbeths words were a great challenge for Macbeth. Macbeth said, Bring forth men-children only for thy undaunted mettle should compose nothing but males (I.VII.7 2-74). Macbeth meant you have such a hardened heart that you should only bear male babies (Snodgrass 51). Lady Macbeth felt he was too compassionate to kill Duncan in order to claim the throne. He would rather take the throne fairly (Snodgrass 37). Questioning Macbeths manliness pressured him into killing King Duncan. Lady Macbeth gave the excuse that she could not kill Duncan because he looked too much like her father. She said, Had he not resembled my father as he slept, I had done it (II.II.12-13). She was giving an excuse for why she did not want to kill Duncan. This showed she lost strength when she saw Duncan sleeping, for he reminded her of her father. It showed she became weak inside and pressured Macbeth instead. Lady Macbeth tried to sound tough when she said, Unsex me here, but became weak when she saw him sleeping. Macbeth was afraid that the plan will fail, and the people will find out that he murdered Duncan. She told Macbeth, Screw your courage to the sticking-place, and we will not fail (I.VII.60-61). Lady Macbeth said, If we pretend to grieve for the king no one will challenge us (I.VII.77-79). He finally decided he wanted to prove to Lady Macbeth that he was a real man. Macbeth went through with the decision and murdered Duncan. She said, Smear the faces with blood. Macbeth refused, Mocking his weakness, she takes the daggers and performs the task herself (Rozakis 240). Lady Macbeth put blood on Duncans guards and laid the daggers next to them. She left the people thinking it was Duncans guards who planned the murder of their king. The Bible gave us many good examples of how we need to submit ourselves to our husbands. God gave a command that said, Wives submit to your husband as is fitting in the Lord (NIV Colossians 3:18). Lady Macbeth should have let Macbeth make the decision based off of what he was right and what he felt was the right decision. She was only thinking of herself and what she got from the situation. She knew she wanted to have the title of becoming queen and did not think of the consequences that could come from the situation. I Corinthians 11:3 stated, The husband is to assume leadership in the home. The husband and wife should both show love and respect towards each other, but he should have told Lady Macbeth I will do what is best for us. Both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth experienced guilt and regret after the murder of King Duncan. Macbeth experienced regret because he had to hire murderers to kill Banquo and Fleance to cover up the slaughter of Duncan (Rozakis 240). Macbeth began to feel insanity from the whole situation. Lady Macbeth was affected from the situation when she began to sleep walk. As Lady Macbeth was sleep walking, she began rubbing her hands. She rubbed her hands trying to get the blood off of them (Quennell 134). She kept thinking that her hands were bloody from when she smeared the blood on the faces of Duncans guards. This drove her into insanity, which eventually led her to commit suicide. The story of Macbeth was a good example that showed the effect of peer pressure. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in America among teens. Peer pressure has not only led to suicide, but also drug overdoses, fatal car accidents, violent crime, and unwanted pregnancy (Unknown Author). Teens, who have been pressured by their friends, sometimes turn to suicide as a way out (Unknown Author). Lady Macbeth only thought about fame and power and did not think about the consequences of her actions. She pressured Macbeth, which led to Duncans murder. She did not only think about how this decision could affect her. She felt guilty, which led to her insanity. One action led to not only the murder of Duncan, but the murder of herself.

One of which is Theodore Roethke, who has written many pieces that leave the writer confused about what he may really want to convey through his pieces. His mother sent him to Arthur Hill School because she was opposed to sending him to Saginaw High. At Arthur Hill School, Roethke learned his writing skills. As a freshman, he wrote a speech about the Red Cross. This speech received worldwide recognition and was written in twenty-six languages. Roethke had somewhat or a rough life during High school. During his junior year of High school, his uncle committed suicide in February and his father died two months when he was fourteen. Roethke was an accomplished writer early in school, but at the same time his success was tarnished by the difficult life he endured through High School. Roethkes troubled adolescence may be a reason why it is hard to know exactly what he is means through out his poems. After High school, Roethke attended University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. While at College, he joined the Chi Phi fraternity, played tennis, and worked. When he graduated, he went to Law School for a short period of time before dropping out to pursue a degree in Literature at Harvard University. Roethke was forced to withdraw from school due to his depression. After leaving school, he started writing many of his wonderful pieces and had several jobs along the way. One of his most famous works is The Waking, Poems written and published in 1954. For this wonderful piece Roethke received the Pulitzer Prize, the most prestiges award a writer can receive. In 1942, Roethke, wrote My Papas Waltz. Many of Roethkes pieces leave the reader wondering about what happened during the poem. In My Papas Waltz, he continues this legacy of leaving the reader wondering when reading his poems. At he age of 37, after writing many outstanding pieces, Roethke wrote My Papas Waltz. In My Papas Waltz, Roethke leaves the audience wondering about what he really wants to convey through his work. In My Papas Waltz, Roethke the reader is confused about what Roethke is trying to convey to the reader. When first reading the poem, you may think that the father is abusing his son but in reality the father and son may have a wonderful relationship. Roethke may have written this poem in reponse to the depression he suffered as a child and as well when his father, uncle, and mother dying. The speaker in the poem leads the reader to believe his father is abusing him. While in reality, if you look into the poem deeper you can tell that maybe the father and son are having fun together. Roethke uses sarcasm in his peom about his fathers attitude towards his son (Ashley). In lines five and six he wrote, We romped until the pans slid from the kitchen shelf. (Ashley) If you look at what happened closely the father and son were actually fighting until the walls shook and everything fell. The father obviously drinks often and turns violent. It is also clear that happened what happened before, like he is used to being abused, because the speaker talks as if it wasnt a big deal. (Jane) The speaker may act as if it is no big deal when it really is not a big deal at all, but wants the audience to think so. The rhyming cadence of Roethkes My Papas Waltz follows the order of steps of the dance alluded to the poems title. The structure of the poem follows the rough pace of the Waltz and the conflict between the father, mother, and son that the waltz displays in the poem. The speakers recollection of what has happened generates several narratives that show the vision home and what goes on there. As you read the poem, the speakers displays different signs of abuse and terror that goes on in the house through the first two stanzas. The first stanza of the poem seems to convey the terror and abuse the child encounters from his father. The little boy, the speaker, starts off with a somewhat of a frightening tone in his voice. (Jane)As an audience, we may think that this means the father is abusive while in fact he might just have had one shot of liquor after a hard day at work. Another point made in the first stanza is the whiskey could make a young boy dizzy. If one exams hard and looks for possible explanations, one should know that any amount of whiskey smelt by a young child would make him dizzy. When reading this poem one may think that Roethke meant this to be is an abusive situation, where in fact this may be a normal night for the family. The waltzing among them the son and father turns into a more rough like manner as the two continue. In the second stanza, the waltzing becomes rougher and conveys to the reader that this may be an abusive situation. We romped until the pan slid from the kitchen shelf. After reading this line, an audience would immediately presume that the father is abusive to his son. This may be abusive but may also be the two having a great time together. One can have a fun time, but at the same time be rough while doing so. I feel that one should have an open mind about what may be really going on during the poem. In the last tw o lines of this stanza, it says, My mothers countenance Could not unfrown itself. When one first reads these lines, one would think she is scared and doesnt know what to do about the situation with the son and father. The mother in fact may not be able to believe the two can play this long and rough together. I know when I grew up that my mother had a face that way many of times after watching my dad and I having fun together. Roethke leaves the audience here wondering whether she is scared about her husbands abuse or whether she cant believe they are causing this much mayhem having fun together. Once you look at this closely, the father and son are just having a great time together due to the fact that the son doesnt get to see his father much. As I said before, it looks like the father is a drunk and abusive when in fact he has a shot of whiskey every night he comes in. In the third stanza, Roethke leaves the audience thinking that the son and father are having fun together opposed to the abuse that some think is happening. A battered knuckle, an ear scraping a buckle, those may seem like descriptions of beatings with a belt. That stanza alone can spell out negativity (Jane). However, I do not see how this stanza can mean that the poem is completely negative. When the two are waltzing, I do not feel that there is any abusive going on here. They are just so close together dancing that it sounds worse than it may be when you read this line. If you are dancing this close and as rough as these two were, anyone could get a battered knuckle. After waltzing much of the night, the father puts the son to bed. When putting the son to bed, it is clear to me that the two have a strong relationship together. In the final part of the poem, Roethke displays a kind-hearted father. After waltzing much of the night, the father puts the son to sleep. Then waltzed me off to bed Still clinging to your shirt. The boy didnt want to go because maybe he doesnt get to see his father very often and he clings to his shirt because it just may be one of the most satisfying things that he has done with his father and he doesnt want to lose the joy in it (Jane). During the poem, Roethke left his audience wondering about what view to take on his piece. Until the last sta nza, I could not completely tell if this was an abusive situation or an enjoyable situation. I now am confident that these two had a wonderful relationship. If this was not a good relationship, I do not think the son would have wanted his father to stay or would have been holding so hard to his father. Roethkes My Papas Waltz is a poem that leaves an audience wondering to what side it should take. Many of the pieces Roethke wrote over his career did that it as well. He leaves the reader scratching its head to what went on in this piece. Maybe this is his way of making his reader think about things that may happen in real life. Hercules' Expiation and Marching Orders To learn what further course he must take, Hercules consulted the oracle at Delphi where the Pythian priestess told him to expiate his crime by serving King Eurystheus for 12 years. The Pythian also changed Hercules name from Alcides (after his grandfather Alcaeus) to what we normally call him, Heracles (in Greek) or Hercules (the Latin form and the one most commonly used today regardless of whether the reference is to a Greek or Roman myth).
